"May all good things come your way at Christmas and throughout the New Year."

The largest fleet of any passenger locomotive ever built”--this was the claim to fame of Pennsylvania Railroad’s 4-6-2 Pacific, the K-4. At the height of their popularity in 1928, 426 of these locomotives were on Pennsy’s roster. Research and development of the units had begun in 1907, at a time when the PRR was already recognizing the need for a new, more powerful passenger locomotive. Construction of the first K-4, No.1737, was completed in May of 1914. Although they lacked the horsepower of some later models, the K-4’s were “state of the art” for their time and would go on to attain an unparalleled record of success, serving the public for more than forty years. As depicted here, Engine number 2445 has drawn into the station at Red Bank, New Jersey on a cold Christmas Eve early in the 1950’s. May the scene lead you to also pause and reflect over happy memories of holiday seasons past.

"May the spirit of Christmas abide with you throughout the coming year."

Denver & Rio Grande Western crews ready narrow-gauge engines for the road at Chama, New Mexico.

In the foreground, K-36 Mikado No. 489 awaits No. 497, taking water, for a westbound move.

The traffic was freight-only for many years; the motive power, as always, was steam. The operation continued for more than eighty winters.

"Tho’ the years may go rushing on by, fond memories stay strong. Thinking of You at Christmas"

Calendars on SaleIn this nostalgic glimpse back to the middle of the 20th Century, one of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s trademark GG1 electric locomotives navigates the tracks along the Northeast Corridor on a cold December morning.
The Pennsylvania operated 139 of these GG1s, whose pleasing appearance was designed by Raymond Loewy. General Electric built the first fifteen GG1s in 1934-35; the rest of the fleet was assembled in Pennsy’s shops at Altoona, Pennsylvania. The unit could produce 4,620 continuous horsepower and routinely whisked 18-car trains between Washington and New York in 215 minutes with five station stops. By 1959 the fleet of GG1s had effortlessly racked up 337 million miles. Passengers of the GG1s could be confident that they would be home for Christmas!

"May there come to you at this holiday time an abundance of the precious things of life: Health, Happiness and Enduring Friendships"

In this scene from the late 1930’s, we see an R-2 powered Great Northern freight extra waiting for a clear board as the westbound Soo-Dominion #3 accelerates out of snowy Minot, North Dakota. Drawn by a class H-3 4-6-2 Pacific type locomotive, the passenger train has just departed from the downtown depot and will soon cross the Great Northern diamonds enroute to Portal and a transfer over to the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Great Northern R-2 will get the green light as soon as the Soo has cleared the crossing. Nicknamed “The Magic City,” Minot was one of many American towns that were founded as a direct result of westward expansion of the railroads. Magic is truly in the air in this nostalgic scene, with two classic locomotives crossing paths and Christmas quickly approaching.

"Another holiday season is rolling in... Hope yours is the merriest that’s ever been!"

The stillness of a cold winter dawn is shattered by the booming stacks of three Maine Central “Mikes” as they head for the two-percent grade up Crawford Notch, deep in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire.

Sizeable freights rolled over this line from Portland, Maine to St. Johnsbury, Vermont; when steam ruled the railways, helper engines were always on hand in the tiny mountain town of Bartlett, New Hampshire. May the friendly wave shared by the engineer and sleigh driver span the years with this ageless message--peace on earth, good will toward all!

"Peace and Good Will at Christmas and through all the New Year"

Running all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles, the Santa Fe Chief once ruled the great Southwest.

Throughout the years of steam’s supremacy, the Chief was never challenged. One of the biggest, fastest and most durable steam locomotives ever built, this 2900 series engine with its 4-8-4 wheel arrangement carried premium-paying Pullman passengers at high speed with maximum comfort.

Here, the mighty train is painted against the dawn of a high-desert winter morning, headed for the summit of Cajon Pass and nearing the end of its long holiday journey.

May the strength and beauty of this great train be a measure of the good will and friendship that we send to you this Christmas Day.

"Hope this finds you looking forward to a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

The Christmas Season has settled on the Baltimore and Ohio’s Cumberland, Maryland to Huntington, West Virginia mainline. In a view from the fireman’s seat of the cab of an eastbound freight, the westbound Metropolitan cruises into view through the falling snow. The mail-heavy holiday season train is led by two E8s, and helped up front by an A-B-A set of blue F-units. The train may be made up of a hodgepodge of equipment, but it certainly would be fun to go back to the B&O during Christmas 1966.

"May a guiding light shine for you and clearly show the way to peace and love and happiness all through the Holidays!"

Calendars on SaleA Chicago and North Western 4-4-2 Atlantic simmers in the crisp wintry air as it pauses at a rural Midwestern depot. In 1900, the Schenectady Locomotive Works built six of these Class D Atlantics for the C&NW. These new locomotives caused a sensation in the railroading world, celebrated for their 81-inch drivers which allowed them to attain a considerably higher speed than most locomotives of the era. C&NW put them to work providing high-speed service to premium passenger trains on the railroad’s portion of the Overland Route.

"Wishing You A Joyous Holiday Season and a Bright New Year"

Calendars on SaleRio Grande’s Yampa Valley Mail at Tunnel 29. The daily local train on the Rio Grande line between Denver and Craig, Colorado was affectionately known as the Yampa Valley Mail, even after the train lost the mail contract in 1963. This train was one of the last haunts for the elegant Alco PA’s that began life hauling premiere name trains like the Exposition Flyer and the California Zephyr. The locomotive, a baggage car and a coach were all that made up the train on most days. Nonetheless, trains 9 and 10 provided an important service to northwest Colorado until the train’s demise on April 7, 1968.
